UTIs times 2 for the month

Sunday night, Rowdy came down with a 103 degree temperature in a hurry. Poor buddy was just miserable and on fire. He had a urinary tract infection a couple days after his cathedar procedure earlier this month and had similar symptoms. Lance and I decided to give him Tylenol and try to make it through the night to see our pediatrician first thing Monday morning. I gave him some Tylenol around 6 and monitered his temp every hour. From 8p-9p he cried and couldn't be consoled, something hard for us to handle, seeing he has NEVER been a baby who cried much at all. He fell alseep at 9pm, I think from pure exhaustion from crying so hard. I put him in our bed to snooze, our room always is the coolest in the house. Lance and I crawled into bed with him and were awake not two hours later to an unconsolable baby who's temp was up again to 103. Within being awake for a few minutes, he began to shake, like the fever shakes. Lance and I decided we couldn't make it 9 more hours of him being so uncomfortable and something obviously wrong, we decided at just after midnight to make the drive for our first ER visit.

The car ride over wasn't fun. Shaking, screeching baby, who was crying so hard, it sounding like he was honking. Pulling into the hospital parking garage, God saved us the first parking spot closest to the entrance to the ER. We walking in and were called to the counter and the glass window slid open. We got checked in and were asked to move down a few windows to speak to a nurse on duty. We recounted the entire history... cathedar procedures, congenital hydronephrosis of the kidneys, recent previous UTI...and yadda yadda yadda. We were very fortunate to not have to wait, we never even sat down. Rowdy at this point is just lethargic, not even wanting to lift his head. We went back in triage and took Rowdy's stats. Oxygen levels were normal, temp still just under 103. They checked his heart, checked his breathing. Rowdy was a trooper and just sat on Lance's lap the whole time. They put his little hospital bracelet on his left ankle and we were off to an ER room.

When we arrived they gave him a dose of Motrin to follow up the Tylenol I had given him at home before we drove in, to knock his fever down. We spent the first hour, catching the nurse and dr up on medical history and recounting the last month of issues regarding his bladder/kidneys. We decided that we needed to to a urine analysis to first check for infection there, which was our first thought. We spent the next couple hours waiting for Rowdy to urinate into a little bag. Lance and I just sat and held him and sang through all the songs we know, counted to 10 in 5 languages we know, going thru all the colors and how to spell them. Anything to keep him occupied. We had a WONDERFUL nurse named Natasha, who took wonderful care of us. She provided us with multiple pedialites and apple juices to keep him hydrated. She also had called up to Pediactrics to ask them to bring a present down for Rowdy. She walked in with a....

SUPERMAN!!! She said she was sorry, she had tried to find a teddy bear of some kind, but superman was what arrived. I told her it was perfect and what boy doesn't love superman! Finally, we had some urine! Called the nurse back in and they whisked it off to be tested. We waited to hear what they had to say. They came back within 30 mins or so and told us that there was in fact an infection in his urine, and they would be sending it away to be cultured. They ordered a dose of antibiotic being sent down from the hospital pharmacy seeing it was the middle of the night and they wanted to get it in his system as soon as possible. By this time it is after 3 and we are all exhausted. Rowdy's temp is under control now, but we are all ready to go home and try to get some sleep.
We got home and were in bed by 4am. Monday Lance and I both took work off to take care of our boy who was still battling fever and very uncomfortable.
This has been an exhausting first half of the week. Rowdy is still not sleeping great thru the night, seems to be tired but just can't settle because he is in obvious discomfort. Yesterday he was still battling fever, tylenol is our friend right now. I am having to force him to drink and eat something, he hasn't been quite in the mood for either. My typically happy happy boy, has been not so happy the last couple days.
It is heart wrenching as a parent to have to watch your child be sick and in pain. Today, he seems to be improving, which gives me a sigh of relief that the antibiotics are kicking in! I am just praying this time they will squash the life out of this infection.
Please pray for quick recovery for him and rested bodies & minds of the parents to care for him!

  1. Poor sweet little Rowdy. I don't think I've ever seen him with furrowed brow like he has in the photos...it must be SO painful for him.

I hope he feels better soon and kicks this infection. Tell him Grandma Cici is on her way to see him soon!

  2. Oh Rowdy boy! this has really cut into your Tutu time. Makes me sad. You look like kriptonite attacking Superman.
Here's to the antibiotics kicking the crap out of that infection!

  3. My son had a UTI at 3 weeks. They had to do the whole shebang on him because he was so young...including an attempt to spinal tap him! It was horrible. They had an IV stuck in his head and we didn't know it was a UTI for a few days. I'm sure he's feeling better by now, but I'm sorry he felt so crummy.
